This doesn’t mean that religion is avoided altogether. Religion will be taught objectively as it relates to the history of the time. Religion is covered from a historical perspective, without presenting one religion as the only right way. Even some Christian families feel that religion can be taught at another time, but not during history classes or other academic subjects such as science.
I went to school in the 90s and I didn’t hear many stories from minorities or women throughout history and their contributions to our society. The history many of us were taught had a strong Euro-centric and Manifest Destiny viewpoint. As an adult, I decided it was time to change that. I have learned so much history on my own AND with my children while we homeschool. Providing a truly diverse education to my children is very important to me, so my research for the perfect curriculum includes options that will provide children with a diverse and inclusive history education.
Homeschooling has become more popular AND more diverse between 2019-2024. The rates at which minorities are homeschooling has risen dramatically since 2019. Now in 2024, we are seeing a more diverse homeschooling population. Black households have seen the largest increase out of all ethnic groups. As you can see, the homeschooling population is getting more and more diverse. It is more important than ever for us to provide a diverse and inclusive education to our children.
This could be our chance as a society to understand the history that was edited out of our education. A diverse history curriculum teaches children empathy and compassion toward people from all backgrounds and cultures. It is an invaluable experience for the whole family. It also benefits society as we grow and understand each other’s experiences on a deeper level.
Why Would Someone Choose a Homeschool Secular History Curriculum?
Religion is very personal and secular curriculums are not trying to say anything negative about religion. Secular curriculums remove extra variables that may alter how history is viewed and interpreted. Many families teach their children their faith during homeschooling but do it separately from academic subjects. How I Made My Choices to Decide the Best Secular History Curriculums
On this list, I am covering full history curriculums. I did not want to overwhelm anyone with the numerous homeschool history resources out there, because there are so many! It can get overwhelming to plan a history curriculum on your own. I curated my list to share options that are easy to implement, have lessons laid out, and take less time to plan. Due to my background as a scientist, I generally recommend secular resources, so that is what you will find on this list.

The lesson plans are thorough and interactive but require parents to do some prep work. Parents must first choose which units to teach, gather the necessary books, and print out student pages. The prep work ultimately pays off, providing children with a complete history education.
4. Khan Academy

AGE RANGE: Their History courses are designed for upper middle school and high school students. They also offer AP and college-level courses.
STYLE: Online in modules, self-paced
WHAT IT COVERS: Khan Academy utilizes the OER Big History Project and World History Project covering everything from the Big Bang to the present day. Other courses offered include US History, Art History, World History, the Constitution, and US Government and Civics.

The courses are geared towards older students and can be a bit dry sometimes. Add high-quality living books, supplemental reading, or other resources to keep your student engaged. The courses are secular and show various viewpoints, which is important for raising critical thinkers. Khan Academy is a great resource for any homeschool, especially those on a budget.

Torchlight makes sure its material is diverse, representing voices from all races, genders, nationalities, and perspectives. We have used Torchlight in the past, and we have loved the book recommendations. Torchlight states that their curriculum is made so that the adult learns alongside their children. I can tell you from firsthand experience that this statement is true! That is one of the things that makes this curriculum so much fun for the whole family.

In addition to curriculum, you could add a history or geography subscription box to provide your children with hands-on learning experiences that keep them engaged and excited about learning.
Choosing a curriculum and resources that work for your child will provide a diverse history education and help them form a deep love of history that will last a lifetime.
Remember: It is ok to switch to another curriculum if a certain one is not working for you. This is not considered a “failure”. It is a learning experience of what does not work for your family. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right curriculum. Some families may find that homeschooling without a curriculum works better for them.
