In this article, I will discuss the top choices for all-in-one 6th grade homeschool curriculum. “All-In-One” options mean that all subjects or ALMOST all subjects are included. Most curriculums will have everything you need to get started. Each curriculum varies. I chose a variety of curriculum types so you could find something that would fit well with your homeschooling style and your family’s lifestyle.

Whether you are looking for a hands-on learning experience, an online option, or something in between, I have curated a list of the best sixth grade homeschool curriculum choices to help you make an informed decision for your child’s education. 

What Subjects Should Be Included with a 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum?

A sixth-grade curriculum should include a variety of subjects to provide a well-rounded education. Here are the core subjects:

STEAM Subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math

Social Studies: History, Geography, Civics

Students in sixth grade should also be taught critical thinking and problem-solving skills in addition to academic subjects.

How I Decided on the Best 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

For this article, I am listing all-in-one 6th grade curriculums. This means that every subject, or ALMOST all subjects, are covered. Most of the time you will just have to supplement math or language arts with another curriculum, workbook, or other resource. I will later write articles about each subject in more depth.

I have included free and paid options. For each curriculum, I list the price, recommended age range, style, what it covers, how the purchased material is delivered, how it is taught, and the pros and cons. Every family has different needs.

If you are a working parent or short on time, using a done-for-you, all-in-one curriculum will probably be easiest. These are available on online platforms or as boxed curriculum sets and require less time prepping and planning for the parent because they are already done for you. 

We are relaxed, eclectic homeschoolers (sometimes I just say we are unschoolers). I like to find curriculums and pick and choose what we will use from each for the year. I usually base these choices on my children’s interests. So, my recommendations are products I have used firsthand, things I plan to use in our homeschool in the future, or would consider using myself- if I had more time!

Due to my background as a scientist, I recommend secular resources. If there is any question, I will specify if the resource has any Christian or religious undertones. We are a secular homeschooling family, and we find it easy enough to skip over the parts that do not apply to us. I also chose to keep it simple so it would not be too overwhelming. As a homeschooling mom with ADHD, I often get so caught up looking for a curriculum that I get overwhelmed and accomplish nothing, or buy and plan too much and feel defeated, overwhelmed, and burnt out later. The goal of this post is to save you from that feeling of overwhelm.

FREE All-In-One Sixth Grade Curriculum for Homeschool

1. At Home Middle School

PRICE: Free

AGE RANGE: Middle School

STYLE: Online, flexible, self-paced, secular

WHAT IT COVERS: Language Arts, Life Science, Math, Social Studies, Poetry, Spanish, Coding, Creative Writing, Chess, and Great Artists

HOW THE MATERIAL IS DELIVERED: Online in modules 

HOW THE MATERIAL IS TAUGHT: There are around 175-200 lessons for each subject for each academic year, depending on the grade level chosen. Students navigate the daily lessons in modules, which include readings, videos, and/or writing prompts. You can track progress on the platform and answer questions for lessons in the answer boxes provided. The curriculum uses various multimedia resources such as Crash Course, National Geographic, the History Channel, Ted Ed, Geography Now, CK-12, Khan Academy, and other reputable sources. Open-source texts are also used throughout the curriculum. Lessons can be taught individually or family-style, depending on the age of your children.

Is At Home Middle School Right for You?

At Home Middle School is an amazing FREE website that offers year-long studies for grades 6-8. It was created by web developer, former professor, and homeschooling mom Melissa Caldwell. She realized homeschooling can be very challenging, so she created this resource to make the homeschooling journey more seamless for families. We use At Home Middle School in our homeschool. It is easy to implement, and we really enjoy it! Amazingly, she offers this curriculum for FREE!

The curriculum is relaxed and the videos are interesting to children and adults alike. Working through the videos and lessons during the summer is a productive and enjoyable way to relax inside the house on hot days, and it keeps your child learning year round.

2. Khan Academy

WHAT IT COVERS: For sixth grade Khan Academy offers Math, Language Arts, Science, History, and even Life Skills. 

HOW THE MATERIAL IS DELIVERED: Online with lessons to be completed independently by the student

HOW THE MATERIAL IS TAUGHT: Students complete lessons online in modules. The courses are usually simple in design. Instructors use a computerized whiteboard while they teach. Lessons may include videos, articles to read, practice questions, and sometimes short essay answers. The platform uses an adaptive algorithm to personalize the learning experience, ensuring that students receive targeted practice based on their strengths and weaknesses.

Khan Academy employs a mastery-based approach, encouraging students to work at their own pace until they achieve a thorough understanding of each topic. Concepts are introduced in a simple, visual manner, often using real-world examples. The step-by-step explanations and instant feedback on exercises make it easier for students to grasp and apply new concepts.

Is Khan Academy Right for You?

Khan Academy offers so many courses, and they are all free! Some courses are AP or college level and can translate to high school credits later on. You can access the courses for free, even without an account. You will have to make a free account to track your student’s progress.

The courses can be a bit dry sometimes. Add high-quality living books, supplemental reading, activities, or other resources to keep your student engaged. The courses are secular and show various viewpoints, which is important for raising critical thinkers. Khan Academy is a great resource for any homeschool, especially those on a budget.

3. CK-12 Foundation

Is CK-12 the Right 6th Grade Curriculum for You?

CK-12 is a nonprofit organization that provides free AND customizable K-12 open educational resources. The material is aligned with state standards and is used by over 200,000,000 students worldwide, so you can rest assured that it is a solid homeschool curriculum for sixth grade.

Is Discovery K12 the Right 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum for You?

Discovery K12 (DK12) is a free online educational platform that can be used as a main curriculum for homeschooling. You can later upgrade to a parent/teacher account for $99 a year if desired.

Parent-teacher accounts include grade books, quiz/test scores, answer keys, attendance tracking, reading logs, scope and sequence, help with transcripts and diplomas, certificates of completion, and 24-hour support. Parents can pick and choose what their child will be learning. If you need to have math in a certain grade level but language arts in another grade, you can do so. I would say this would be a great choice for any homeschool- and its FREE!

One bonus is you can get a student ID card through Discovery K12. This allows you to access student discounts online or at museums and more. Discovery K12 looks like a robust educational platform and a great choice for homeschooling families, even without paying for the parent account.

5. Time4Learning

Time4Learning offers customizable lesson plans for parents, who can also access student records and set up schedules. Parents can choose grade-level courses or customize lessons based on their child’s needs, with options for special configurations if required (ex: your child is in 8th grade but needs 6th grade math).

Is Time4Learning the Right 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum for You?

Time4Learning is a trusted online curriculum that covers PreK-12th grade in language arts, science, math, social studies, and electives. The parent support features give parents more control over their child’s education. Many homeschoolers use Time4Learning as a main curriculum, a supplement for certain subjects, or a summer learning opportunity. Parents do not need to use the planning feature if they do not want to. Time4Learning claims to have tools that support all instructional methods.

Time4Learning is used at many accredited schools across the United States. It is educationally rigorous, but it is a curriculum provider, not an accredited school, which means it does not issue report cards or diplomas. The parent is responsible for tracking and making transcripts for high school students. 

Overall, Time4Learning is an excellent choice for homeschooling. It is especially great for busy or working parents. The curriculum requires less parental involvement, which in turn develops the skills for children to learn more independently. We are going to try out Time4Learning in our homeschool this year. I will update you later and share our experience with it!

6. IXL

PRICE: Single Subject is $9.95 monthly, and you can choose from math OR language arts. Their Combo Package is $15.95 monthly and includes math AND language arts. The Core Subjects package is $19.95 monthly and includes math, language arts, science, and social studies. You can also add Spanish to any package option for an extra $5 monthly. IXL is a comprehensive curriculum aligned with state or provincial standards. You can specify your location when you set up your account. The website is easy to navigate and has many helpful tutorials for parents to get you started. IXL uses adaptive learning, using insights from student work to create personalized recommendations to meet students exactly where they are, which helps them progress faster and learn concepts more deeply. While IXL offers all subjects, their specialty is math.

Subscriptions include planning and tracking of students. Parents can choose daily or weekly email reports on their student’s progress. There are detailed reports to help parents see what topics their student is struggling with and which skills they have mastered. IXL would be a great choice for families looking for an online homeschooling option that is easy to implement.

7. Miacademy and MiaPrep

STYLE: Online, Accredited, Standards-aligned, Secular- but they do have a Bible Study elective add-ons for both Jewish and Christian families.

WHAT IT COVERS: Math, Social Studies, Science, Language arts, and Electives such as Music, Art, Life Skills, and several Foreign Languages in including American Sign Language. 

HOW THE PURCHASED MATERIAL IS DELIVERED: Online in modules

HOW THE MATERIAL IS TAUGHT: Lessons include online exercises, video instruction, games, and activities such as printable worksheets and science experiments. They are divided into three parts: the Teaching section, which consists of videos. Then, there are practice questions, and finally, there is the assessment. 

Is Mia Academy the Right 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum for You?

Mia Academy and MiaPrep Online High School are both accredited by the Western Association for Schools and Colleges (WASC) and can be used as a main curriculum, depending on your state’s laws. Mia Prep Online High School IS permitted to award diplomas and course credits to high schoolers.

MiaAcademy can be used in a relaxed homeschooling environment as well. A parent account is included in the subscription. Parents have the freedom to choose which lessons and activities children complete and which grade level their child is ready for in each subject. This makes it easy to create a unique, personalized educational experience. Overall, I would say that Mia Academy is a great choice for families looking for a comprehensive online curriculum that requires less time planning from the parent.

8. Next Level Homeschool

WHAT IT COVERS: Science, History, Language Arts, Visual Arts, and Electives

HOW THE PURCHASED MATERIAL IS DELIVERED: Online in modules, Self-paced, Secular

HOW THE MATERIAL IS TAUGHT: There are no live meetings. Lessons are completed online and have engaging PowerPoints with images and videos that are fully narrated. They offer supplemental optional activities so you can customize your child’s learning experience. Some classes have discussion boards with the instructor, but all classes have an “open talk” forum where students can get to know their classmates. Assignments vary, but students have choices of projects to choose from each week. They then present their assignment in various ways, such as posters, models, videos, skits, songs, or written assignments. There are quizzes and optional grading.

Is Next Level Homeschool the Right 6th Grade Curriculum for You?

Next Level Homeschool was started by a former homeschooling mom named Mary Middlebrook and offers a wide range of science, history, language arts, and visual arts courses. It offers various science topics and other unique courses for 6th graders, such as Cybersecurity, Marine Biology, Plagiarism, and Harry Potter Genetics.

Children can work on executive functioning skills, which is great for children with ADHD. There are customizable tools for students to develop skills like time management, planning, organization, responsibility, independence, and more!

Literature Based All-In-One 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculums

These options require more implementation and time from the homeschooling parent. In many homeschooling curriculums, all subjects are generally included other than math. I will specify when any curriculum indicates that you will need a separate math curriculum.

9. Build Your Library

AGE RANGE: Kindergarten-12th Grade

STYLE: Literature-based, Charlotte Mason-Inspired, Secular

WHAT IT COVERS: History, Language Arts, but also incorporates some Science and Art Studies

HOW THE PURCHASED MATERIAL IS DELIVERED: The curriculum is delivered as a PDF file. You can print it at home or use a third-party service that will print and mail the material to you.

HOW THE MATERIAL IS TAUGHT: Parents read the suggested books aloud to their children, while some of the suggested books are meant to be read by the student independently. Additionally, the material incorporates Charlotte Mason-style narration, copywork, and memory work. The curriculum includes art studies with fun projects that tie into the time period being studied.

Is Build Your Library the Right 6th Grade Curriculum for You?

Build Your Library is a flexible, literature-based homeschool curriculum. It was developed by Emily Cook, who has homeschooled her four children for over 20 years. There are full-year options as well as individual unit studies. 

This curriculum is a great option for parents looking for a rich, literature-based curriculum. The price is reasonable, and the curriculum lays out a schedule to keep parents and students on track. We have used their book suggestions in our homeschool. Emily has come up with great reading lists for every age.

10. Torchlight Constellation Series

AGE RANGE: 6th grade and above

STYLE: Literature-based, Eclectic, Socratic approach, Secular

WHAT IT COVERS: Their full curriculum is designed to be interdisciplinary, covering literature, poetry, vocabulary, social studies, geography, science, arts, and more. They even have individual studies covering rock and roll history and one covering finance and responsible consumerism! The constellation series are language arts unit studies, but they are currently working on a full curriculum.

HOW THE PURCHASED MATERIAL IS DELIVERED: The curriculum is delivered as a PDF file that you can either print at home or have printed by a third-party printing service that will mail the material for you.

HOW THE MATERIAL IS TAUGHT: Parents read the suggested books aloud to their children. The material includes hands-on learning, game-schooling, and car-schooling options recommendations to make homeschooling a lifestyle. It caters to a wide variety of learning styles. There is a weekly schedule for parents, and each unit study is 4 weeks long. 

Is Torchlight the Right 6th Grade Curriculum for You?

Right now, Torchlight offers four different four-week unit studies for 6th grade. Torchlight currently only offers full curriculum for K-5, but they are working on a full curriculum for middle school as of summer 2024.

My favorite thing about Torchlight’s Curriculum is that it is based on the Socratic Method. Socrates believed students should not be fed answers but should be taught how to ask questions. This enables us to raise true critical thinkers with the confidence and ability to answer any question and solve any problem later in life.

Torchlight ensures that its material is diverse, representing voices from all races, genders, nationalities, and perspectives. We have used Torchlight in the past and have loved the book recommendations. Torchlight states that its curriculum is designed so that adults learn alongside their children. I can tell you from firsthand experience that this statement is true! That is one of the things that makes this curriculum so much fun for the whole family.

11. Oak Meadow

The curriculum is very structured, but parents can add or remove material or assignments as they please. Is Oak Meadow the Right 6th Grade Curriculum for You?

Oak Meadow’s book-based curriculum is designed to give independent learners choices and opportunities for meaningful learning experiences. Oak Meadow incorporates elements of project-based, play-based, and experiential learning with creative activities to capture the interest of all types of learners.

Enrolling with Oak Meadow as an accredited distance learning school is also an option. There are no scheduled class times, but parents and students can contact Oak Meadow teacher support or their assigned teacher with any questions through email, phone, and/or video conferencing. Your assigned teacher will give you feedback and help with evaluations. 

Oak Meadow is an internationally accredited distance learning institution, so they can give academic credit to enrolled students. There are no scheduled online class periods. Oak Meadow will retain records for you and provide a certificate of completion. High School students that meet Oak Meadow’s graduation requirements will receive a diploma.

Evan Moore would be a great choice for families looking for an easy way to cover all subjects. It would be a great option for working parents or parents short on time who cannot spend hours planning, researching, and implementing. Evan Moore might be the right choice for your family if you are looking for an open-and-go curriculum.

Additional Resources for Sixth Grade

There are so many quality resources out there for homeschooling middle school students. Here are a few of my favorites:

TedEd Teaching Materials: We watch TedEd videos all the time in our homeschool! It is one of my favorite resources. Parents can create lessons for their students with custom questions and discussion prompts. Or you can just have fun and watch the videos together on YouTube (that’s what we do). They even have a section on their website where students can learn how to give a Ted Talk themselves!

BrainPop Homeschool: BrainPop is an online learning platform covering 800+ diverse topics which includes videos, assessments, and learning activities. You can have up to 4 children profiles, and the Insight Reports track and celebrate your homeschooler’s progress. It costs $39.95 monthly, or $350 annually.

OutSchool Classes: Outschool is an online learning platform where students can pick and choose classes they would like to take. These are live classes and they DO cost money per session. The price varies by class and instructor. There are also social clubs that meet up weekly. My daughter meets weekly with a group of children that all love the same book series that she is obsessed with. She always looks forward to her Outschool session every week!

Homeschool Subscription Boxes: Add some hands-on learning by choosing a homeschool subscription box that fits with your family’s homeschool style AND your child’s learning style, interests, and comprehension level.

Choosing the best curriculum for 6th grade can be overwhelming with so many options to choose from. When looking for a curriculum, it is important to consider your child’s learning style.

It is also important to consider the level of parental involvement in lessons, planning, and implementation. How hands-on or hands-off do you want to be as a homeschool parent?
